Every once in a while one comes through the barn that is a little outside of what we normally have, and this guy has been a fun change of pace.
HS Corey Twenty Three is a 2023 registered Saddlebred gelding standing 15.1 hh. I don’t get the opportunity to ride a lot of Saddlebreds, but after riding this horse, I can certainly appreciate one like him.
What impressed me first wasn’t his movement or athletic ability—it was his mind. This gelding is gentle. He comes to you in the pasture to be caught and made over, enjoys being groomed, and is simply pleasant to have around. He had gone over a week without being touched when I pulled him out, threw the saddle on, cinched him up, and stepped aboard. He walked off like it was just another day. No hump. No buck. No foolishness.
Once you get him moving, there’s plenty of horse there. He is athletic, light on his feet, and has three nice gaits. He has that naturally proud Saddlebred presence without needing to be hot or silly about it. He is young enough to take in whatever direction suits you, while already having the kind of brain that makes the process enjoyable.
We also took him right out on the road. Cars were going by at speed, and Corey handled the traffic quietly and sensibly. For a young horse, I really appreciate how he takes new things as they come rather than making a big production out of them.
I’ll tell you his bad habit just as quickly as I’ll tell you the good—he does crib. It doesn’t change what he is under saddle or how enjoyable he is to handle, but a buyer deserves to know it.
